Grand Prix Quebec

The UCI ProTour continues to grow and expand its horizons in 2010, with the creation of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in Canada.

The two races are the only UCI ProTour events to be held in North America and represent a huge step forward for the globalization of cycling. Both races will be held on the traditional Labour Day holiday weekend, creating a special atmosphere.

“Holding this international cycling competition in Québec over the next five years is part of our ongoing efforts to host international sports and cultural events,” Québec Mayor Régis Labeaume said when the race was officially presented last year.

“We hope these races will spread the European passion for high-level cycling throughout Québec and the rest of North America.”

The Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec will be held on Friday September 10th in the centre of the old Québec City over a total distance of 189km. Thanks to the hilly terrain the race will include 3000 metres of climbing, making for a selective and aggressive race. Each lap is 12.6km long as it winds through Québec City and the nearby Parc des Champs-du-Bataille.

Thanks to its UCI ProTour status and support from both the Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP), and the association representing the riders, the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA), the race will see the best teams and riders on the start line.

The classics riders who excel in the hilly races such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Amstel Gold Race will be favourites for victory. The race looks perfect for Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) but will also suit Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and anyone who can climb well but also has a fast sprint and a good tactical mind.
