UCI will check for hidden motors at Tour de France
Bikes used at the Tour de France will be scanned to make sure they do not contain illegal motors, the UCI announced on Friday.
The move comes following speculation that Fabian Cancellara used ‘mechanical doping’ during his victories in the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix, which the Swiss Olympic time-trial champion strongly denied.
“The members of the management committee discussed issues concerning equipment used in road competitions and decided that it was necessary to bolster measures that have already been put in place (in particular the visual inspection of bicycles, a procedure that was recently reinforced),” read a UCI statement.
“As a result, a scanner will be used from the time of the Tour de France. This instrument, recently tested with a successful outcome, will allow an official to detect any illegal devices that may be concealed, for example, in the bicycle frame.”
Suspicions that Cancellara had put a motor inside the frame of his bike were sparked by a much-watched video on the YouTube video-sharing website.
His Saxo Bank team released a statement earlier in June refuting the claims.
The UCI’s management committee, which met in Birmingham, England on Thursday and Friday, nonetheless decided to tighten their bike checking procedures.
“From now on race service will be subject to stricter regulation in order to ensure that only equipment that has been checked at the start or finish can be used during competitions,” the UCI added.
The 2010 Tour de France begins in Rotterdam on July 3 and concludes in Paris on July 25.

Get On Your Bike – Sky Ride Is Back
Sky and British Cycling, today announce the return of Sky Ride – the free family-oriented mass participation cycling events in 10 cities and smaller local rides taking place across the UK.
Twelve Sky Ride events will take place in 10 cities across the UK this summer and each of these events have traffic-free streets, enabling cyclists to enjoy a day of bike-based entertainment and to explore their city on two wheels with family and friends. The free events aim to encourage thousands of people, of all ages and abilities, to get on their bikes.
The Sky Ride events take place up and down the country starting in Ealing, in west London on 18 July and then moving to major towns and cities across the UK: Bath and Southampton (25 July), Manchester (1 August), Middlesbrough and the London Borough of Redbridge both (15 August), Glasgow (22 August), Leicester (29 August), Bradford (29 August), Blackpool (31 August), Mayor of London’s Sky Ride in central London (5 September) and Birmingham (12 September).
This year’s events will build on the success of 2009, which saw over 110,000 people take part. Since last July, Sky’s national cycling activities have encouraged almost 300,000 people to start cycling more frequently (cycling more than before Sky Ride 2009) and 92,000 of these people have become new regular cyclists (cycling at least once a month or twelve times a year)*. Earlier this month Sky and the Greater London Authority won the prestigious Sports Industry, Sport Participation Event of the Year Award for the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride 2009.
Sky Ride is being backed by a line-up of celebrities and pro-cyclists this year who will be attending the events across the country. Participants will be able to ride alongside the likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Kelly Brook and Bradley Wiggins.
Announcing this year’s summer of cycling, Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s Chief Executive said; “After the fantastic response we had from the public last summer we want to make this year’s Sky Ride even bigger and better. Ultimately we’re aiming to get a million more people cycling regularly by 2013. Through Sky Ride, we want to get Britain back on its bike.”
Sky Ride ambassador Sir Chris Hoy said; “Sky and British Cycling have a genuine opportunity to make a positive difference to people’s lives by encouraging as many people as possible to get on their bikes. I had a fantastic time at last year’s events in Glasgow and London and it was great to see so many families enjoying all the activities and having fun. I am thoroughly looking forward to attending Sky Ride events this year.”
Kelly Brook, Sky Ride ambassador said; “I am so pleased to be involved with Sky Ride again this year. It is a fantastic initiative and cycling is a great way to stay in shape and keep healthy. Since being involved last year I’ve enjoyed getting out and about on my bike more and I can’t wait to take part in the London event again this September.”
Ian Drake, CEO of British Cycling, said: “Together with Sky and Sport England we want to inspire people to get out on their bikes more regularly. After the success of last year’s Sky Ride, the initiative is back in 2010 to offer you the opportunity to ride your bike alongside stars such as Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy. Sky Ride is a fun day out for the whole family and a perfect way to explore your city in a safe environment, so register today and play your part in turning Britain into a true cycling nation.”
A series of Sky Ride Local events will also be taking place across the country. Trained cycle leaders from British Cycling will guide small groups of cyclists on routes in a number of the Sky Ride cities every Sunday throughout the summer. The local rides will offer a selection of routes at different levels of difficulty ranging from Ride Easy and Ride Steady for any age or ability, to Ride Well and Ride Strong for adults and teenager who want a slightly harder challenge.
More advanced cycling enthusiasts will also be catered for this year with the Sky Ride Etape Hibernia a competitive cycling event taking entrants over an 80-mile course in scenic countryside in County Clare, Ireland on 22 August.
Young people are encouraged to get on their bikes this year through British Cycling’s initiative Go Ride, a cycling development programme for young people, and Go Ride Racing, a national entry level competition programme that bridges the gap between school and club based coaching sessions and racing. Also Sky Ride Schools, a series of led-rides planned across the summer hosted at schools to encourage young people and their families to get cycling.
People interested in Sky Ride or cycling can visit www.goskyride.com for news, information and online registration for each of the Sky Ride events. The site will also feature tips and expert advice on how to ride safely and look stylish plus views from Sky Ride’s cycling ambassadors.

Scrapertown
Video by California Is A Place. Props to my friend Kit, who writes, “Never underestimate the power of good people with a passion for the bicycle. Even in East Oakland. Especially in East Oakland.” This video is good stuff, and I’ve met the Scraper Bike King Baby Champ and he’s good people.
This kid has heart. Champ Stevenson started promoting Scraper Bikes in Oakland when he was still a teen and is still going strong with it.
How long before we see Mormon missionaries on Scraper Bikes?

Rain in Santa Rosa
The previous editions of the Amgen Tour of California have started on Presidents Day weekend in February. Rain and cold weather has been a problem for viewers, for the cyclists, and for the aircraft orbiting overhead that shoot video and relay radio traffic from the bike race to ground stations so the rest of the world can follow the world online.
The weather was a big part of the reason Tour of California organizers moved the race to May. They took a gamble, because this week competes with another huge bike race in Europe somewhere. They might not get the caliber of riders they might otherwise attract in a February race.
Irony: Before 2010, the Tour of California has started on Presidents Day Weekend. This year, Santa Rosa was sunny, dry and 66° on that weekend. It was a lovely weekend for a bike race last February.
Tomorrow’s race from San Francisco to Santa Cruz should be much nicer!

Santa Cruz bike collision map
In their bicycling promotion work, Ecology Action in Santa Cruz prepared this map of 2008 Santa Cruz bike collisions.
View Ecology Action Produced Map of Reported Bicycle Collisions in Santa Cruz County, 2008 in a larger map
The blue bubbles show cyclist at fault; red bubbles are motorist at fault; green means that fault was undetermined. According to Ecology Action, 221 crashes were reported in 2008, although many more are not reported. There was a 26% increase of bike crashes with injuries, 189 total, compared to the average from the preceding three years of crash figures.
The two 2008 fatalities are both green:
- The first was Chris Rock on Mission Street near Bay. He was cycling along the edge of the road when a passing cement truck merged right into Rock.
- Lucian Gregg was cycling downhill on East Cliff next to the San Lorenzo River on his brakeless fixie when he collided into the back of a stopped delivery truck. There were no witnesses to this collision.
By comparison, 27 traffic fatalities and 1,183 injuries out of nearly 3,000 reported traffic collisions were reported in Santa Cruz County in 2008. About half (13) of those traffic fatalities were on Highway 17 or Highway 1. You won’t ever see General Motors or Ford publishing this in their marketing, but a map showing those collisions would be a sea of red bubbles covering every roadway.
