Pozzato Wins 12th Stage, Porte Retains Lead
PORTO RECANATI, Italy, May 20, 2010 (AFP) – Italy’s Filippo Pozzato won Thursday’s 12th stage of the Tour of Italy with Australian Riche Porte holding on to the leader’s pink jersey.
Pozzato, the first Italian to pick up a stage win since the start in Amsterdam, prevailed in a sprint for the line after the 206km run from French duo Thomas Voeckler and Jerome Pineau
This trio headed a group of 10 riders who had detached themselves from the main bunch a dozen kilometres from Porto Recanati.
Tempers flared in the final push when Spain’s Carlos Sastre and Australian world champion Cadel Evans had angry words with a rival rider.
The peloton crossed the line 10 seconds adrift of the leaders with half a wheel splitting the first two home.
“It’s a dream to win on the Giro whilst in possession of the Italian world champion’s jersey,” said Katusha team rider Pozatto.
“This season has been difficult,” the 28-year-old who won the Milan-SanRemo classic in 2006, added.
“I went for this victory with my heart, I needed this success.”
Porte, of the Team Saxo Bank, said he was having to pinch himself.
“For me it really is unbelievable to wear this precious Maglia Rosa,” he said. “Not even in my remotest dreams I had imagined something so great.
“I sometimes get lost in thought and I can hardly believe what’s happening to me.”
Friday’s 13th stage takes the riders on a run from Porto Recanati to Casenatico, the hometown of 1998 Giro winner Marco Pantani who died in 2004.

Aussie Porte Takes Command As Flood Disrupts Stage
L’AQUILA, Italy, May 19, 2010 – Richie Porte became the first Australian since Robbie McEwen in 2005 to don the Tour of Italy overall leader’s pink jersey on Wednesday following the 11th stage, the 262 kilometres ride from Lucera to here.
Porte, a 25-year-old former swimmer and triathlete, replaced Kazakh veteran Alexandre Vinokourov in pink in a stage won by Russian Evgeni Petrov – celebrating his birthday early as he turns 32 on May 25 – in torrential rain that saw the stage disrupted by a river breaking its banks.
Vinokourov and Australian Cadel Evans suffered badly in the wretched conditions losing over 12 minutes to Spain’s 2008 Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, who put behind him his disappointing tour so far in which he has fallen three times, to leapfrog the two of them in the overall standings.
Porte, who won the time-trial stage on the Tour of Romandy this season, was stunned at his elevation to overall leader.
“I can scarcely believe this!” he gasped.
“I cannot still understand how this could happen. But I am in a good position, with a good team who were underestimated by others at the beginning of the race.
“But when one sees how Chris Sörensen, who has already won a stage, sacrificed himself for me as he did today that is impressive.
“I am going to try and hang onto the pink jersey.
“But this is the first time that I am competing in a major tour.”
Vinokourov, who at 36 has shown he is as hungry as ever for success and restore his battered reputation after being thrown out of the 2007 Tour de France in disgrace for blood doping, for which he received a year’s suspension, said that his challenge was not finished.
“It was a very long day. But it is not finished. They (the other
favourites) were watching out for me to react. Now, it is for the other teams to dictate matters. The race is a long one.”
Sastre was delighted at the end result.
“It is a result beyond our wildest dreams,” said Sastre, who is eighth overall, but more importantly over two minutes ahead of Vinokourov and Evans.
“The situation with regards to the bigger picture has been completely turned on its head after a difficult start to the Tour.”
Evans was short and to the point about the stage.
“It was a long day, horrible and bizarre.”
Sastre had got away with around 60 other riders at the 35km mark before the really bad weather set in and at one point the breakaway group had built up a near 20 minute lead.
Both Vinokourov and Evans’ teams worked frantically to limit the damage proving costly as both lost two riders apiece.
The business end of the race saw a battle between Germany’s Linus Gerdemann and Belgium’s Jan Bakelants, but his challenge came to an end when he fell on the drenched surface 1800 metres from the finish line.
Petrov, though, was to deny Gerdemann victory as he crept up on him to cross the line first to record his first success in the race in a career that has rarely tasted the heights that he experienced when crowned junior world champion in 2000.
“I went with the escape group with the idea of winning the stage,” said Petrov.
“My last win was so long ago (2002) that I can’t even remember it!”
Thursday’s 12th stage is a 206km ride from Citta Sant’Angelo to Porto Recanati on the Adriatic Coast.

Haussler shows strong return to form at Tour of California
Short Bio: Who is Amgen Tour of California race leader Brett Lancaster
Brett Lancaster of the Cérvelo TestTeam has become one of Thor Hushovd’s most trusted leadout-men, helping his team to victories in the Tour de France and Volta a Catalunya last year. But Lancaster can win in his own right too, as he proved in Monday’s stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California.
The 30-year-old, 6’2”, 175-pound Australian sprinter entered, and won, his first race at age 14 and never looked back. He began his career on the track, taking home the 2002 and 2003 world championship in the team pursuit. Lancaster won the gold medal in the same discipline at the 2004 Olympics, racing with Graeme Brown, Bradley McGee, and Luke Roberts. The team clocked a time of 3:58.233, good enough to break the world record at the time.
Lancaster began his professional road career with team iTeamNova.com in 2002, then moved to Ceramica Panaria-Navigare from 2003 to 2005.
He took his first professional victory in stage 3 of the 2004 Tour of Langkawi, crossing the line solo after a 150km breakaway. In 2005, Lancaster won the shortest Giro d’Italia prologue in history, covering 1.15km in just 1:20, making him the first ever Ceramica Panaria-Navigare rider to don the maglia rosa.
Lancaster signed on with Team Milram in 2006, moving to his current home at Cérvelo last season. He won the second major prologue of his career in the 2009 edition of the Deutschland Tour, and his win in California marks his first major non-prologue win as a professional.

Cantwell Claims 5th At Tour of California
Sacramento, USA – Fly V Australia’s Jonathan Cantwell finished 5th behind Mark Cavendish (Columbia HTC) in Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California.
On paper today’s 167km stage from Nevada City to Sacramento looked like the best opportunity for the pure sprinters to make an impact. The stage started at a frantic pace as those wanting to escape the sprinters teams tried their luck on the largely downhill course to remain in front of the sprinters at the finish line in Sacramento.
It didn’t take long for a break of 4 to establish a lead that went out to 5 minutes at one point. Rabobank, Bissell, BMC and United Health Care were represented in the break. Behind the break it didn’t take long for the Columbia HTC team of Mark Cavendish to assume responsibility for keeping the four leaders in check.
With 80 kilometers left to race and the gap to the four leaders hovering at around 3 minutes, the chase proper began in earnest. The four escapees were eventually caught just inside the final 30 kilometers setting the stage for the sprinters to leave their mark on the race.
In what would turn out to be a chaotic final marred by crashes the fastest sprinter in the world would win on the day. Jonathan Cantwell said, “I was well positioned in the final lap but probably started my sprint from too far back, I was coming up on Hunter (Garmin) and Kristof (BMC) but couldn’t quite get over them ahead of the line. Today was a great confidence booster and I’ll certainly be trying again through out the week for a stage win.”

Goss Brings More Aussie Stage Glory In Tour of Italy
CAVA DE’ TIRRENI, Italy, May 17, 2010 – Australian rider Matthew Goss won the ninth stage of the Tour of Italy on Monday, a 187 kilometres ride under the driving rain from Frosinone to here, recording his country’s third success in the race this year.
Kazakh veteran Alexandre Vinokourov retained the overall leader’s pink jersey while Australia’s road race world champion Cadel Evans is in second place.
Goss, 23, who finished second in the second stage of this year’s edition, beat home Italian champion Filippo Pozzato while American Tyler Farrar was third in a sprint finish that was unusually contested also by Evans and Vinokourov.
“It’s my greatest victory. A stage on a big tour, that counts!” said Goss.
“I’m not a sprinter like (Mark) Cavendish, I need more difficult conditions like those today.”
Pozzato added: “Another difficult stage. The rain doesn’t stop. I didn’t like the finish.”
Russian rider Mikhail Ignatiev had tried to make a clean break 10km from the finish along with Canada’s Michael Barry before being swept up five kilometres later.
The peloton while pursuing the duo had been briefly cut in two 15km from the finish as Vinokourov’s Astana team upped the pace forcing Evans and another rival for the overall crown Italian Ivan Basso to chase them down.
Tuesday’s 10th stage sees the race reach its southernmost point with the
230km ride from Avellino to Bitonto.

HTC-Columbia’s Matthew Goss wins stage 9 sprint at the 2010 Giro d’Italia; Vinokourov retains lead
There’s never a dull day so far in the 2010 Giro d’Italia.
What on paper looked like a transition stage, where the pack could take it “piano” after a hectic opening week, turned into yet another fight to the death as a heavy deluge hammered the peloton in the 187km ninth stage from Frosinone to Cave de Tirreni.
The Giro turned south past Rome, but the weather was once again a protagonist. The peloton busted up into pieces in the undulating stage, with riders such as Carlos Sastre (Cervélo) lost nearly two minutes after puncturing late in the race.
HTC-Columbia switched gears in the finale, leading out young Australian Matthew Goss for the win.
Goss swapped from lead-out duty for André Greipel to star as he held off the field two bike lengths clear of Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) to win the drag race up a gradually rising finish. Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) crossed the line third to recapture the points jersey from Cadel Evans (BMC).
“There was a four-rider breakaway but we made very sure that we kept them at a manageable distance,” said HTC-Columbia sports director Tristan Hoffman said. “The weather was really bad at times, sometimes the streets were like rivers and that made it a lot harder. However, our goal was always to get a bunch sprint, and even though we had no support from other teams and had to work like crazy, the team did a brilliant job today. In the final kilometer Matt took his chance.”
Vinokourov retained the pink jersey
“Today I took advantage of the work of HTC-Columbia,” Vinokourov said. “It was a relatively quiet stage only disturbed by the heavy rain. My only concern was to not lose seconds to Evans, which is why I was in first position in the final and why I took the sprint. Everything else is fine. The maglia rosa is on my shoulders and the legs feel good.”
In fact, Evans and Vinokourov found themselves at the sharp end of the action on the rising finale as neither wanted to be caught out or risk losing time bonuses.
Wearing the red (points) jersey instead of his usual world champion stripes, Evans surprisingly found himself leading out the sprint.
“Vinokourov attacked in the last kilometer, so I followed him,” Evans said. “But with the headwind, I think he went a little early so I was left on the front and had to continue on with it.”
Evans also said there were nervous moments after his puncture with 30 km to go. “The photography motorbikes were blocking the roads and that opened up some splits in the crosswinds.”
The early break
The Giro got its second work week underway with a flurry of attacks at the start before a break got established relatively early, before the 10k mark.
The break:
- Michael Barry, Team Sky, 43rd at 23:35
- Tom Stamsnijder, Rabobank, 117th at 54:18
- Giampaolo Cheula, Footon–Servetto, 137th at 59:26
- Mikhail Ignatiev, Team Katusha, 160th at 1:07:20
Over rolling terrain that was descending slightly over the course of the day, the four beat out a gap hovering just under three minutes for the bulk of the afternoon, as Vinokourov’s Astana men took the front. Later in the day, HTC-Columbia and Garmin-Transitions felt obligated to take the front in hopes of setting up a field sprint. With those two teams sharing the chase duties, the gap was brought down to under two minutes with 60km still to go.
The roads were often wet and a few cloudbursts soaked the riders, many of whom donned rain capes and clear glasses.
The rain picked up in the final 30k, giving the break some hope that it could fend off the chase pack. But breakaways had prevented field sprints too often in this Giro, and the gap came down to under a minute with 25k to go.
As the route entered some more twisty roads on the approach, the gap went back up to over a minute, and Astana went on the attack, forcing a separation in the front of the field. Evans and Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone-Caffe Mokambo), ninth on GC, were among those who were caught out by the attack, but soon clawed their way back to the lead chase group, which entered the final 10km with a 25-second lead.
Carlos Sastre (Cervelo TestTeam), however, had a poorly timed puncture and was unable to reconnect.
The finale
Up front, Ignatiev attacked his breakmates with 9km left. Barry was able to rejoin the Katusha man, but Stamsnijder and Cheula drifted back to the peloton. The Canadian and the Russian were only able to hold off the pack another couple of kilometers, before being sucked up with less than 5km to the line.
HTC-Columbia controlled the front in the final kilometers, keeping the pace high to prevent any opportunists attempting a flier on the short climbs coming into town.
Coming into the final kilometer, Evans started an early sprint, going after crucial time bonuses, but Vinokourov marked him before the sprinters swarmed past.
The white and yellow team had switched gears this day and worked for Goss rather than Andre Greipel. The 23-year-old Australian, who was second behind Tyler Farrar on stage 2, got it right this time, outkicking Filippo Pozzato and Farrar.
“With 400 meters to go, I told myself, ‘if André is behind me, he will overtake me. Then I lowered my head and no one came around,” Goss said. “Today’s win is the biggest of my career so far. I’m not a pure sprinter, but I am fast. Greipel is still the captain, but if the opportunity arises, I will try to win again.”
Pozzato said the surprising presence of the GC riders in the finale foiled his chances to win a stage while wearing the Italian national champion’s jersey.
“Today was also a hard stage for the rain. I liked this stage and this arrival and that’s a pity for my second place. Ignatiev went in the break, so our team don’t worked,” Pozzato said. “In the final sprint there were general classification men in front and I didn’t know what wheel I had to take for the sprint”
Up next
Tuesday’s stage 10 is another for the sprinters — albeit one with a long lead up. The 230km stage from Avellino to Bitonto crosses the foot of the Italian peninsula to Bitonto, near the Adriatic city of Bari. (Related: 2010 Giro d’Italia route).
