Pozzato Wins 12th Stage, Porte Retains Lead

PORTO RECANATI, Italy, May 20, 2010 (AFP) – Italy’s Filippo Pozzato won Thursday’s 12th stage of the Tour of Italy with Australian Riche Porte holding on to the leader’s pink jersey.

Pozzato, the first Italian to pick up a stage win since the start in Amsterdam, prevailed in a sprint for the line after the 206km run from French duo Thomas Voeckler and Jerome Pineau

This trio headed a group of 10 riders who had detached themselves from the main bunch a dozen kilometres from Porto Recanati.

Tempers flared in the final push when Spain’s Carlos Sastre and Australian world champion Cadel Evans had angry words with a rival rider.

The peloton crossed the line 10 seconds adrift of the leaders with half a wheel splitting the first two home.

“It’s a dream to win on the Giro whilst in possession of the Italian world champion’s jersey,” said Katusha team rider Pozatto.

“This season has been difficult,” the 28-year-old who won the Milan-SanRemo classic in 2006, added.

“I went for this victory with my heart, I needed this success.”

Porte, of the Team Saxo Bank, said he was having to pinch himself.

“For me it really is unbelievable to wear this precious Maglia Rosa,” he said. “Not even in my remotest dreams I had imagined something so great.

“I sometimes get lost in thought and I can hardly believe what’s happening to me.”

Friday’s 13th stage takes the riders on a run from Porto Recanati to Casenatico, the hometown of 1998 Giro winner Marco Pantani who died in 2004.

Pooley top GC at Tour De l’Aude

In a tough fourth stage of the Tour de l'Aude, Cervélo TestTeam's Emma Pooley (GBR) finished second and now takes the lead in the GC, ahead of Adrie Visser (NED) from HTC Columbia with a...

Cantwell Claims 5th At Tour of California

Sacramento, USA – Fly V Australia’s Jonathan Cantwell finished 5th behind Mark Cavendish (Columbia HTC) in Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California.

On paper today’s 167km stage from Nevada City to Sacramento looked like the best opportunity for the pure sprinters to make an impact. The stage started at a frantic pace as those wanting to escape the sprinters teams tried their luck on the largely downhill course to remain in front of the sprinters at the finish line in Sacramento.

It didn’t take long for a break of 4 to establish a lead that went out to 5 minutes at one point. Rabobank, Bissell, BMC and United Health Care were represented in the break. Behind the break it didn’t take long for the Columbia HTC team of Mark Cavendish to assume responsibility for keeping the four leaders in check.

With 80 kilometers left to race and the gap to the four leaders hovering at around 3 minutes, the chase proper began in earnest. The four escapees were eventually caught just inside the final 30 kilometers setting the stage for the sprinters to leave their mark on the race.

In what would turn out to be a chaotic final marred by crashes the fastest sprinter in the world would win on the day. Jonathan Cantwell said, “I was well positioned in the final lap but probably started my sprint from too far back, I was coming up on Hunter (Garmin) and Kristof (BMC) but couldn’t quite get over them ahead of the line. Today was a great confidence booster and I’ll certainly be trying again through out the week for a stage win.”

Goss Brings More Aussie Stage Glory In Tour of Italy

CAVA DE’ TIRRENI, Italy, May 17, 2010 – Australian rider Matthew Goss won the ninth stage of the Tour of Italy on Monday, a 187 kilometres ride under the driving rain from Frosinone to here, recording his country’s third success in the race this year.

Kazakh veteran Alexandre Vinokourov retained the overall leader’s pink jersey while Australia’s road race world champion Cadel Evans is in second place.

Goss, 23, who finished second in the second stage of this year’s edition, beat home Italian champion Filippo Pozzato while American Tyler Farrar was third in a sprint finish that was unusually contested also by Evans and Vinokourov.

“It’s my greatest victory. A stage on a big tour, that counts!” said Goss.

“I’m not a sprinter like (Mark) Cavendish, I need more difficult conditions like those today.”

Pozzato added: “Another difficult stage. The rain doesn’t stop. I didn’t like the finish.”

Russian rider Mikhail Ignatiev had tried to make a clean break 10km from the finish along with Canada’s Michael Barry before being swept up five kilometres later.

The peloton while pursuing the duo had been briefly cut in two 15km from the finish as Vinokourov’s Astana team upped the pace forcing Evans and another rival for the overall crown Italian Ivan Basso to chase them down.

Tuesday’s 10th stage sees the race reach its southernmost point with the
230km ride from Avellino to Bitonto.

1. Matthew Goss (AUS-THR), 4:08:17 (20" boni) 2. Filippo Pozzato (ITA-KAT), z.t. (12" boni) 3. Tyler Farrar (USA-GRM), z.t. (8" boni) 4. Robert Forster (DUI-MRM) 5. Federico Canuti (ITA-COG) 6. Sebastien Hinault (FRA-ALM) 7. Wouter Weylandt (BEL-QST) 8. Gregory Henderson (NZL-SKY) 9. Swift takes Picardie overall

Ben Swift (Team Sky) did not contest the final sprint of the Tour de Picardie in France, because he didn’t have to.

With overall victory all but assured, the young British sprinter stepped aside and let the others chase glory in the 174.5km third and final stage from Crépy-en-Valois to Sissonne on Sunday. It’s the first major victory for Swift, one of the most promising British sprinters since, well, Mark Cavendish.

Jimmy Casper (Sojasun) out-kicked Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi) to win the stage in just over four hours. Team Sky did its part by controlling the stage to set up the mass gallop.

Fernández slotted into second overall at seven seconds back, with Alan Davis (Astana) rounding out the podium at 10 seconds back.
