Menzies Secures Overall Win At Murietta

Murietta, CA – Karl Menzies secured the first ever overall win for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis, finishing 3rd in Sunday’s final stage to win the omnium (points) at the Tour de Murietta.

“The guys had another good day today,” said team directeur sportif Gord Fraser. “They worked really well together yesterday in the crit and again today in the road race. They’re executing really well, and the teamwork was critical to getting Karl the overall win against some strong competition.”

Menzies opened up the three-day omnium, in which riders accumulate points for their stage placings, with 2nd in the time trial Friday behind teammate Rory Sutherland. He took over the top spot in the standings after earning points for his 13th place finish in Saturday’s crit, after helping teammate Eric Barlevav to 4th place in the stage. He sealed the overall with his 3rd place today.

Barlevav finished the race in 4th overall. “That was a good result from Eric for his first stage race with UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis,” Fraser commented.

The Tour de Murietta, was the second test in the team’s “re-season” preparation for the NRC-opening Redlands Classic begins March 25. The team will make their final preparations next weekend at the San Dimas Stage Race.

The roster will change up a bit for San Dimas, with Brad White, Andrew Pinfold, Max Jenkins and Jake Keough joining Sutherland, Menzies, Jonathan Clarke and Chris Baldwin.

San Dimas kicks off Friday with a 3.7-mile climbing time trial. The race continues Saturday with 12 trips around a challenging 7-mile circuit, and finishes Sunday with a 90-minute criterium around a 1.2-mile course in San Dimas.

Paris-Nice – Jurgen Roelandts led the whole stage

Heavy snow falls have caused today's stage of Paris-Nice to be shortened from 208 to 155 kilometres. The start point was eventually moved to Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, with the finish as programmed at Aurillac. The stage was still quite hilly, with one 3rd category and three 2nd category hills on the way, with the last climb, côte de la Martinie, just 5 kilometres short of the finish.

30 kilometres after the start, our Jürgen Roelandts attacked with Belgian Nicolas Maes (Quick.Step) and Frenchman Yann Huguet (Skil/Shimano). The gap increased regularly, reaching about 7' at half distance.

The peloton accelerated eventually, and the leaders were caught at the foot of the last hill, with but 5 kilometres to go.

Over côte de la Martinie, six riders escaped and made it to the finish. Slovenian Peter Sagan (Liquigas), 2nd yesterday, won the stage ahead of Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha).

Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank), 4th today, is the new leader.

Team General Manager, Steve Owens commented “We’re confident in Floyd’s commitment to being a powerful ambassador for the Bahati Foundation and supporting the team in winning marquee events like the Tour of California.”

Josh Berry, a Portland, OR resident, comes to the program as a member of the US National Team in Cyclocross.

Rahsaan Bahati and Floyd Landis will be at Helen’s Cycles at 2501 Broadway in Santa Monica, CA on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 5-7pm. UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis Racing At Merco

Sutherland, Johnson lead UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis into 2010 season kick off at MERCO

Johns and SutherlandOakland, CA – The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis will kick off its 2010 campaign in Merced, CA March 6-7 with the MERCO race weekend.

The races in Merced, which for many years have served as the kick-off to the season, will provide a good test for the nine-rider squad from UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis.

“These races will be a good way for the Team to get the season started,” said team Directeur Sportif Gord Fraser, who knows both the criterium and road race well, having won them both multiple times. “The fields have traditionally been very strong, with a mix of national pro teams and the top regional NorCal elite teams. The criterium offers a good, technical course, and the crowds in downtown Merced are always great.”

The criterium will give the Team an opportunity to start working out tactics and dialing its lead-outs for sprinters Eric Barlevav and Johnny Clarke.

The rolling, 26-mile loop the riders will tackle five times for the road race offers its own challenges, Fraser said.

“The course frequently offers up strong cross winds,” he said. “It’s a rare opportunity in the cross winds, if the conditions allow, because there aren’t many races in the U.S. that offer up these conditions.”

The Team brings a lot of horsepower, including the big engines of Team captain Tim Johnson, Roman Kilun and new addition Adrian Hegyvary. It’s also a course that suits Team leader Rory Sutherland.

One other obstacle Fraser noted has more to do with the course’s surroundings than the course itself. “The almond orchards should be in full bloom,” he says. “That means lots of bees, and I’ve been stung out there on more than one occasion.”

Paris-Nice – Greg Henderson stage winner

The first road stage of Paris-Nice linked Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines with Contres over 201.5 mainly flat kilometres.

The following wind inspired two riders who lead the race for nearly 150 km, with a max. gap of 6'20".

Just after they had been caught, our Philippe Gilbert escaped in company of Tom Veelers (Skil/Shimano). They took one minute to a rapidly thinning out peloton.

With 16 kilometres to go, Phil and Veelers were reeled in by a 70-wheel group which included all our riders, excepting Jurgen Van Goolen and Daniel Moreno Fernandez who had been delayed by a mass crash.

The leading group was eventually reduced to 17 riders, who sprinted for the stage.

The winner was Kiwi Gregory Henderson (Sky Professional Cycling Team) ahead of Slovenian Grega Bole (Lampre) and Frenchman Jérémy Galland (Saur Sojasun).

Dutchman Lars Boom (Rabobank) finished with them; he keeps the leader's jersey.
